The long stitch method of book binding is a non-adhesive codex book structure dating back to the 13th century. This type of binding is sewn or tacked to its cover with long stitches, which appear on the outside of the spine. The long-stitch provides a great overview of basic binding tools, materials and techniques, yet requires only minimal space and equipment. In this workshop, students will make two long-stitch books, including paste paper and cloth covers. Students will first create their own long stitch with a wrap-around canvas cloth cover and stiff spine, and then a second, heavyweight paper cover book, done in the buttonhole style.
The course fee includes all materials but participants will need to bring a basic book arts tool kit (see required materials list).
