This five-part series examines four of those movements in depth through indigenous guest speakers\, films\, and readings. A detailed schedule is below.Instructor Christina Callicott holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Florida\, as well as graduate certificates in Tropical Conservation and Development and Latin American Studies. Her primary research concerns the connection between plants and music in the shamanic practices of the Lamista Kichwa\, an Indigenous group of the Peruvian Amazon. She has also published on neo-shamanism and the religious fervor around ayahuasca in North America. Christina moved to southwest Colorado in 1991. She currently lives in Ridgway\, teaches skiing at the Telluride Ski and Snowboard School\, and teaches anthropology and environmental studies at Fort Lewis College.*Other books and films discussed at at 3/3 class:https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/545014/yellow-bird-by-sierra-crane-murdoch/https://www.thisamericanlife.org/706/a-mess-to-be-reckoned-withhttp://www.donotresistfilm.com/https://milkweed.org/book/braiding-sweetgrass\n\n\n\n\n \n \n  \;\n \n \n Prepare\n \n \n In-class\n \n \n \n \n February 17\n  \;\n \n \n Theme: History\, colonialism\, role of AIM in U.S. and\n international Indigenous movements\n  \;\n Watch 15 min. pre-recorded introduction\n  \;\n Watch Warrior\n Women\n  \;\n Read Estes and Dhillon chapter 21\, by Marcy Gilbert\n  \;\n \n \n Madonna Thunder-Hawk and Marcy Gilbert\n \n \n \n \n March 3\n  \;\n \n \n Theme: Standing Rock: The #NoDAPL Movement\n  \;\n Watch Black Snake\n Killaz\n  \;\n Read Estes and Dhillon: Prologue*\, Introduction (pp.1-5)*\,\n chapters 1*\, 2*\, 3\, 5\, 6*\, 10\, 14*\, 15\, 18\, 21\, 22\, 24.\n *If you have limited time\, please focus on these chapters.\n \n  \;\n \n \n Discuss\n \n \n \n \n March 17\n  \;\n \n \n Theme: Creative approaches to language loss\, culture loss\,\n and environmental restoration\n  \;\n Short blurb re. project: Ekvn-Yefolecv\n Read short online essay “A Radical\n Re-Settlement: Walking the Talk on Indigeneity”\n  \;\n \n \n Presentation by \;Marcus Briggs-Cloud\n \n \n \n \n March 31\n  \;\n \n \n Theme: Chevron vs. Indigenous Ecuadorians\n  \;\n Watch Crude\n Read Cepek\, Life in\n Oil\n  \;\n Highly recommended: “Drilled” podcast\n  \;\n \n \n Q&\;A with author \;Michael Cepek\n \n \n \n \n April 21\n  \;\n \n \n Theme: Self-determination and the Papuan Independence\n Movement\n  \;\n Watch Arrows Against the Wind\, \n Forgotten\n Bird of Paradise\n \n \n Discuss\, wrap up.\n \n \n\n\n \;\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage URL: https://s3.amazonaws.com/static.evanced.info/Customer/wilkinsonpubliclibrary/INDIGENOUS_ENVIRONMENTAL_MOVEMENTS_(1)_CE5B7D90.JPG X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:
