Nourishing Life: Building Immunity & Health with Chinese Health Practices

Learn how to build your immune system naturally in this four part sereis with with Diane Atkinson of An Tao Acupuncture in Mountain Village.
  • Overview:
    • The Chinese health & medicine tradition focus on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual practices to build and maintain health and immunity
    • Based in Daoism, the goal is to create harmony within the body and with the outer world.
    • These practices have been a part of Chinese life and culture for centuries
    • The Nourish Life Tradition includes: 
      • First, avoid behaviors that cause harm.
      • Second, engage in behaviors that actively build health
      • Third, develop mindfulness & meditation practices that nourish and harmonize body, mind and spirit
    • The series will include notes for reference, exercises that can be done at home, simple recipes and lists of herbs and supplements
  • Week 1:  Intro to the Yang Sheng / Nourishing Life tradition in China
    • Includes: 
      • What determines why we get sick, how long we live and how healthy we are
      • Living with the seasons
  • Week 2:  Movement & Rest
    • Includes:
      • The importance of appropriate exercise
      • Sleep & immunity
      • Qigong exercise to strengthen the lungs
      • Acupressure to boost immunity and build health
  • Week 3:  Food & Herbs
    • Includes
      • How to eat to maximize the nutrients you get from your food:  this is all about the physical act of eating, not the food you eat
      • What to eat for optimal health:  how to choose food and drink that supports your constitution and builds health
      • Eating w/the seasons:  autumn
      • Chinese herbs
      • Western supplements
  • Week Four:  Cultivating the Mind & Emotions
    • Includes
      • The harmful effect of unregulated emotions
      • Moderating the emotions
      • Mange the emotions and cultivate the mind with mindfulness, meditation & deep breathing
        • Re-teach the lung qigong exercise: it’s great to learn about deep breathing
        • Learn a simple meditation
Diane Atkinson is a licensed acupuncturist and owner of An Tao Acupuncture in Mountain Village. She is a 1980 graduate of Telluride High School. In addition to practicing medicine, she translates classical Chinese medical texts and practices Chinese calligraphy.
