Indigenous peoples around the world are demanding their rights in the face of resource extraction and land theft using creative strategies to assure a future for themselves. This five-part series examines four of those movements in depth through indigenous guest speakers, films, and readings. A detailed schedule is below.
Instructor Christina Callicott holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Florida, as well as graduate certificates in Tropical Conservation and Development and Latin American Studies. Her primary research concerns the connection between plants and music in the shamanic practices of the Lamista Kichwa, an Indigenous group of the Peruvian Amazon. She has also published on neo-shamanism and the religious fervor around ayahuasca in North America. Christina moved to southwest Colorado in 1991. She currently lives in Ridgway, teaches skiing at the Telluride Ski and Snowboard School, and teaches anthropology and environmental studies at Fort Lewis College.
